June is Lane Courtesy Month
Spring is a time known for cleaning. Everyone kicks it into gear and cleans their house, garage, attic, office, and everywhere in between. For this spring, let’s expand our spring cleaning onto the roads! Not just picking up litter, which would be nice, but cleaning up our courtesy and respect towards others on the road. June is Lane Courtesy month, and we wanted to celebrate it full force here at Coral Cadillac.
Lane Courtesy month is sponsored by the National Motorists Association (NMA). When you get down to it, lane courtesy is moving over to the right-hand lane to allow faster moving vehicles to pass you in the left-hand lane.
This sounds simple enough, but just like all other spring cleaning excuses, we are all guilty of making excuses as to why we are driving slow in the left-hand lane. According to NMA there are three very common excuses:
- Speed limit: I am driving the speed limit, so I should not have to move over for anyone
- Unaware: did not realize that I was blocking faster traffic from getting by
- Don’t want to participate: they do not see why they should join lane courtesy for a number of minor reasons
All of these excuses are just that, excuses. We would all want a slower moving vehicle to move over and let us pass, so we should extend the same courtesy to them, and clean up our roads and practice lane courtesy.
Not only is following the golden rule a good enough reason in itself, but it is a lot better for you and your vehicle to practice lane courtesy. Some of the benefits explained by the NMA include:
o Better gas mileage by staying in a better flow of traffic
o Faster travel time, again, by staying in a better flow of traffic
o Decrease in accidents, again, by staying in a better flow of traffic
As you can see by that pattern, lane courtesy creates a better flow of traffic, which is better for everyone. Help us spring clean our roads by practicing lane courtesy!
